Bloody Sunday was different… Bloody Sunday didn’t happen in the dead of night or down a quiet back street. It happened in broad daylight on the streets of a major city. The killers didn’t wear balaclavas. They walked openly, secure in the knowledge that they were the forces of the State and that the State would protect them. Bloody Sunday happened in front of thousands of witnesses and in front of the world’s media. Hundreds of photographs were taken, documenting the massacre as it unfolded. Most are still available, though the British Army “lost” many of theirs.
This book captures the day as it unfolded, through the eyes of the photographers who, shocked by the events of that day, have always supported the campaign for justice for the victims of Bloody Sunday. They didn’t lose their photographs, they used them. And they are used again here, as a reminder of how a State can and will react to any challenge to its power. These photographs were taken on Bloody Sunday. Unfortunately they illustrate a lot more than the events of one day.
